Grade 8 - Read aloud for ten minutes, and have your reading log signed. Study Greek/Latin roots. Complete Section IV, "Characters" on your "The Sieve and the Sand" handout. Read from page 113 to the break on page 125 in "Burning Bright" in Fahrenheit 451.

Grade 9 - Study Greek/Latin roots. Read Book 12 in the Iliad. Sarpedon's very short speech at the top of page 142 is one of the most famous in the Iliad. In it, he gives his view of a leader's role in war. Answer the following questions in a one-page, double-spaced response: According to Sarpedon, how do the common people view their leaders, and what are the rewards of leading? Conversely, how does he say leaders should live up to their subjects' expectations?
